Day 3:

Mount of Togna - Barletta

Finding a place in Italy is no longer so easy

If yesterday was boring, today was like watching it rain for hours without being able to go out. Lots of cars, little movement and zero excitement… except for a nap that got out of hand. In the end, we clocked almost three hundred kilometres, which is said quickly, but feels long.

We set off late, that's true, because the Monte di Togna place was worth it. Wide views, tranquility and that cool air that makes you think "five more minutes"... which in human terms tends to be thirty. In the end we set off and headed south again, with the idea of getting closer to Foggia.

The morning was basically road. No adventures, no scares, no nothing strange. At noon we stopped next to a church in the middle of the countryside to eat something and rest a little. And that's where the highlight of the day came: the nap. A good nap, the kind that starts with "I'll close my eyes for a moment" and ends up being longer than a film without popcorn.

Afterwards we continued on our route, already with the idea of looking for a place to sleep near Foggia. And here began the small drama of the day. It turns out that in the whole area... nothing. Or almost nothing. On Park4night there were hardly any options and many were only for daytime parking. Papi Edu kept saying that this used to be easier, that there were campervan areas, places in nature... but now, nothing at all. And it's not just a feeling.

In recent years in Italy some things have changed. Municipalities now have more leeway to prohibit overnight stays in campers, even if you are not camping as such. In other words, you can be perfectly parked, without taking out a single chair, but even so they can tell you that you can't sleep there. And many places have started to fill everything with signs. Result: finding a quiet place has become more complicated than assembling a piece of furniture without instructions.

In addition, the area doesn't help much either. Lots of farmland, everything quite open, but few clear places to say "yes here". So we kept using the map and found a place that looked good: the car park of the sanctuary of the Madonna Incoronata in Foggia.

We arrived... and a festival of signs. No parking, no campervans, no breathing allowed. There were more rules there than in a surprise exam. Even so, as on paper our camper is not exactly a camper, we stayed for a while and took the opportunity to take a walk through the nearby forest. Of course, very quietly, without making a noise, as if we were incognito. But to sleep there... no way. It smelled of a night-time fine of the kind that appears at midnight, like ghosts but in uniform. So we had to go with plan B again.

The only option without deviating too much was to continue to Barletta. And that's where we went. We arrived at night and found a place in a wasteland in front of a church. It's not paradise, but it does the job. It's on Park4night and there were more options around the city, but this one suited us.

Of course, it has its downsides: a train passes about fifty metres away and every half hour the church lets out its bell. But hey, within what's possible, it's a "polite" noise. You know when it's coming, it doesn't surprise you. Much better than those strange noises that you don't know if they're wind, ghosts or someone putting together a piece of furniture at three in the morning. So here we are. Long day, not very exciting, but mission accomplished.
