Baños de Montemayor – Plasencia

Rain, mud and a strategic canine retreat

Today we woke up to rain. Not the nice kind, but that fine, persistent rain that takes away your will to do anything. So we started even slower than usual and didn't leave the place where we had slept until after one o'clock. The other two camper vans nearby had already left, but they didn't look like they had got up early either.

We went back to the A66 heading south, towards Plasencia. The car began to protest seriously due to lack of diesel, so we made a technical stop to transfer fuel from the jerry cans to the tank. The petrol stations were still very expensive, so we held out a little longer.

We parked in Plasencia, near the centre, with the idea of exploring the city. But we hadn't been walking towards the Plaza Mayor for ten minutes when it started to rain properly, with wind and cold. The kind of weather that soaks you to the core. You can't enjoy a city like that, so we decided to leave Plasencia for another day and go back to the car with canine dignity.

We went to Carrefour, five minutes away, and Daddy Edu did a good shopping session while I watched the camper van. When he came out, it had stopped raining a bit, but the travelling spirit was clearly in retreat mode.

We tried our luck looking for a place to sleep. First we went to the dam of the Plasencia reservoir, which regulates the Jerte river, but there was so much mud that we quickly ruled it out. Then we went up to the sanctuary of the Virgen del Puerto, much loved in the city and surrounded by beautiful cork oaks. The place was nice, yes, but impossible to find anything even remotely level. Daddy Edu is very sensitive to sleeping uphill.

A few kilometres away there was another place in the middle of nature, on a hill full of large granite balls, very Pedriza-style. There were already several camper vans and plenty of space, but the wind up there was downright criminal. We took a short walk, saw some curious carved stones, and decided that it was better to look for shelter further down.

We went back to the reservoir, to the other side of the dam, and there we did find a quiet corner, in the middle of nature. A lot of mud and puddles, but a sheltered place and just for us. Before closing the day, we had lunch and dinner all in one inside the camper van, at that indefinite hour that is so ours.

It hasn't been an epic day, but we are dry, quiet and warm. And sometimes, with that, it's more than enough.
